The Cervical Exam

When I started in L&D one of the nurses who has been working L&D for over 30 years told me that she went to a conference one time and heard someone say that your first 100 cervical exams as an inexperienced practitioner are more like social visits. You are just checking it out but don't really know what you are looking for.

She then proceeds to tell me a story about a doctor from a nearby area that was in a family practice residency, doing his OB rotation. The first time he went in to check a patients cervix he felt around and quickly pronounced her 2-6 centimeters. (Basically meaning "I have no f-ing clue what I am doing.")

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago while I am sitting in my doctors office for a check up. We were talking about work and he asks me which hospital I work at. When I tell him where I work his eyes light up.

"I did my OB rotation there!" he says. "I came in from (insert area mentioned from above story) and I had no idea what I was doing. The nurses were so nice to me helping me out and teaching me how to check a cervix..."

It was all I could do not to die laughing. He he was, the story of legend that happened over 20 years ago...sitting right in front of me.

I was just talking about this with one of the nurses from our L&D the other day! Or the other week... I'm not sure, they all run together anymore. I'm not a nurse yet, but a unit coordinator in nursing school. I'm sure there are plenty of awkward vag exams to come, though. I love this blog & try to check like every week. Keep 'em comin!

This blog could and should be published into a book. It is hilarious! You definitely have a talent for writing.

I have worked NICU and have worked closely with L&D nurses in the past, so I know where you're coming from. I've always wondered if I had what it takes to be a L&D nurse and you've pretty much answered that question for me. It obviously takes a very strong person to fill this role!

I think it's great that you can find the humor in your work. Sometimes humor is the only thing that can get a person through a 12 hour hospital night shift!

This made me laugh! I was induced with my first and it took forever and at one point a nursing student checked me and said I was a seven, the nurse with her then checked and said, no she's still a 3. I didn't get upset, I just thought it was kind of funny! I'm not a nurse or anything, but I found this blog and think it is very funny!
